On Wednesday March 6th, the Vikings took on the Lady Jaguars of LBJ and came away with a 2-2 tie over a team currently sitting in 3rd place in district.  For non soccer fans, yes we celebrate ties against tough teams, and we celebrate ties when our team plays well and fights every minute.  The game began in what has become an unfortunate trend against LBJ, we found ourselves losing 2-0 at half with little to show after 40 minutes of play.  The 2nd half was a different story with the Vikings getting forward to create scoring chances and playing great team defense lead by GK Leslie Salinas and senior captain Grace Bennie as CB.  However, after 30 minutes of play, it seemed as if the Vikings would yet again fall to the mighty Jags with the scoreline still holding at 2-0.  But no, with only 7 minutes remaining in the game, the Vikings found the back of the net on an instinctive strike from Lesly Garcia off a beautiful corner from Diana Ramirez to make the score 2-1.  Clearly not satisfied with just one goal, the Lady Vikings continued to get forward and scored a second goal featuring a lovely assist from Samantha Mendoza and a technical chip over the keeper from Evelyn Castro to tie the score 2-2.  This was a truly amazing performance from all of these young ladies to fight back and persevere in the face of adversity.  Please congratulate them on this accomplishment when you see them.
The game result was made even more special coming right after celebrating our seniors in one of their last games as Vikings.  It was amazing to see huge parent support and even more support from our underclassmen.  Each non senior on our squads spent several weeks preparing heartfelt posters and filling bags full of their senior’s favorite snacks and drinks.  It was a great night for our program!
Lastly, I’d like to again recognize the twelve amazing seniors we have in our program.  I am so thankful for them and how hard they have worked over the last several years.  If you know any of these young ladies, please congratulate them on an outstanding career here at Lanier.  They are not only amazing players, but also great students with exceptional character and class.  We will all miss them very much.  Seniors: Grace Bennie, Fabiola Barbosa, Iris Aguilar, Lesly Garcia, Ana Nepomuceno, Marilyn Madina, Yoana Soto, Maria Soto, Samantha Mendoza, Diana Ramirez, Mely Gonzalez, and Johana Bahena.
