As a child, I used to watch The Nutcracker (the ballet movie) all the time, along with any Disney films that I could get my hands on. So to see Disney’s rendition of The Nutcracker And The Four Realms, directed by Lasse Hallstroum and Joe Johnston, was an absolute treat! With actors like Mackenzie Foy as Clara, Morgan Freeman as Drosselmeyer, and Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy, there was really no way they could have done wrong with this movie.

For such a classic ballet, this was no classic film, with many plot twists and new details about the characters and their lives. With new details like the death of Clara’s mother and the platonic friendship between the Nutcracker and Clara, Lasse Hallstrӧm, and Joe Johnston completely changed the premise for this movie.

The imagery in this film was amazing! The costume design and makeup artistry were taken in a whole new direction. With what looked like no special effects makeup on the actors and actresses, the cast was transformed into exquisite lifelike toys. With a costume designer like Jenny Beavan, who has won two Oscars, you should expect nothing less than divine.

The film was marvelous, and the imagery was splendid. It filled me with nostalgia and love. A classic tale twisted and performed beautifully!
