The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), was a program ordered by former President Barack Obama. It was designed for those who call themselves “Dreamers” (immigrants who came to America for a chance at better life.)
To qualify for DACA Dreamers could not be over 31 years age by June 15, 2012 and must have lived in the United States continuously since June 15, 2007. However, on Sept 5 , 2017 current President Donald Trump and his administration believed this program to be unconstitutional and overturned it. According to Fox news, DACA protects immigrants who came to the United States illegally as a child, usually before the age of 16, from immediate deportation. Although DACA protects “dreamers” it does not provide them with “legal status.”
The Donald Trump Administration announced their plan to end DACA which now leaves the 800,000 Dreamers future under DACA’s umbrella in the hands of the government. All 800,000 Dreamers are now scared to leave their own homes or talk to anyone out of the fear of being deported.
Former President Obama has spoken out on Trump’s process of trying to rescind an immigration order that would shield some children of undocumented immigrants from deportation, calling the move “cruel” and “self-defeating,” according to CNN. Obama has also stated “To target these young people is wrong — because they have done nothing wrong.”
Critics have said that there could be an upside to this news because Congress is now forced to make a new law. DACA was designed to be a “holding” place while congress figured out what to do with these immigrants, however, since Congress never acted now they have to complete what they started.
